Themes, ideas and images

April 16, 2009

I spend a lot of time thinking about themes. Probably too much time. Right now I’m going though a belonging kind of a phase. Don’t ask me, I just roll with it.

I’m working on highlighting my themes with imagery, too, highlighting the possessiveness of the way fingers curl round the edge of a table, or the way hands spread in front of a person, palms up and empty. I like it. It’s made my shorter work much more sensual and lyrical, less cold. Now I just have to rein in that lushness and stop it from turning into mush or melodrama.

I think my next move is to deal with the uncomfortable disconnect of people who are the unwilling targets of possessiveness. That should keep me out of trouble.
